A big thank you to everyone for all your support on the YWCA Keep a Roof fundraiser. The arrangement on Friday night was that 100 of us slept on the gym floor, simulating what a homeless person might experience at a shelter. It was a most interesting evening, very educational, and a somewhat humbling experience. The net benefit was that over $103,000 was raised to continue to operate Mary Dover House, an 80 bed transitional home offering safe housing for women and children.
Mayor Nenshi stopped by to lend moral support while we were all waiting in line to get into the shelter. As you all know he has quite an engaging personality, so it was a pleasure to be able to meet and talk with him.
After we got checked in and just as we were about to sit down to tuck into a nice bowl of warm soup, the fire alarm went off. This was not a drill. We immediately evacuated across the street. It turns out that the Mary Dover transitional home is part of the same building as the YWCA. We all huddled in the street together, shivering in the cold alongside the same clients (women without a place to live – some fleeing abusive relationships, many of them young mothers with small babies) that are currently staying in Mary Dover House.
For me, this really put a face to the cause, identifying with the very the people that we are trying to support. For all of you - please understand that through your efforts we were able to keep the lights on at Mary Dover House for 4 weeks. The electricity bill is about $1,000 per week. Please accept my sincere thank you once again for your generosity and actually making a difference!
