As you may remember, we did a segment a few weeks ago about our landscape team and their recommendations for landscape design in Calgary. We talked very generally about landscape design and gardening for the harsh Calgary climate. Here we’ve provided a list and brief descriptions of some flowering shrubs that may be appropriate for Calgary landscaping. Remember that a shrub’s ability to thrive is dependent on a number of variables: for example, plant characteristics, landscape attributes and site conditions. 1. Lewis Mockorange
ht. 7 ft – spread 7 ft
A large, sprawling shrub prized for its fragrant white blooms in early summer. This shrub is wonderful in bloom, but fades into the background the rest of the year, making it a plant best used in composition with other plants. This shrub is very adaptable and easy to grow.
2. Common Ninebark
ht. 2m – sp. 2m
This native plant is very hardy and is therefore relatively low maintenance. It adapts well to soil and sun conditions and can tolerate pollution, but thrives in drier, sunnier locations. Often used as a massing along boarders or on slopes, it is a large drought tolerant shrub that makes a great snow shield in the winter.
3.Dwarf Korean Lilac
ht. 4 ft – sp. 5 ft
This is a beautiful and popular shrub with numerous attributes. It has striking spikes of fragrant lilac-pink flowers in late spring, small rounded foliage and a uniform compact shape. This shrub requires full sun and well drained soil; it is neat and tidy, and is an extremely versatile garden shrub.
