The BKDI Graphics Twins, also known as Heather and Charmaine, are off to TYPO San Francisco – an international design conference. They are attending the conference to learn new ideas around print, web, typography, wayfinding and graphic design. We know they'll be inspired and learn new things to help them grow BKDI's Graphics Group. And they'll have just a little fun in San Francisco! We look forward to hearing all about it! 640 Fifth is a thirty year old office tower located in Calgary’s downtown core that is undergoing a major renovation targeting LEED® Canada for Core & Shell Development 2009 – Silver Certification. 640 was the former ‘home’ of the Energy Resources Conservation Board (ERCB) and holds historical significance in the Energy Sector. BKDI Architects, as a member of a multi-disciplinary team, has been working for the past two years with the owner, Sun Life Financial, and the property manager, Bentall Kennedy LP, to bring this 16-storey building back to the market.
640 Fifth has been repositioned to include state of the art mechanical and electrical systems with 100% of the base building electrical demand being supplied by renewable energy. The exterior of the building features several architectural enhancements such as an exterior pedestrian plaza, stainless steel and glass signage and new exterior cladding complete with accent lighting and granite walkways. Interior common areas have been upgraded to offer improved tenant amenities to include a restaurant, main floor lobby, +15 connection, elevator modernization, barrier free tenant washrooms and an exclusive 2,000 square foot Fitness Centre!
To date 90% of the building has been leased and landlord improvements are anticipated to be complete by the end of March.

In what has become a very important and worthwhile annual event for BKDI’s retail and commercial sector, our Team returned to the ICSC Canadian Conference in Whistler, BC. This year’s event, held at the Fairmont Chateau Whistler Resort, was extremely well attended by all the key players in the retail and shopping centre industry and there was a very positive and energetic overtone to all of the business being done. A very good barometer for the year to come in the Shopping Centre development business!
After securing the same prime location on the trade show floor, we began serving our now trademark espresso to all who stopped by to chat. Many great conversations were overheard with all who came by the BKDI booth including current clients who were also at the show, as well as with hopefully some of our future clients. We were excited to be able to participate yet again this year in such an important industry event and are looking forward to next year!

The BKDI Interiors and Graphics teams were invited by Labbe-Leech to their annual Christmas party in January! Bill Jordanov, the president, and also our client, hosted the event at Alloy Fine Dining. Bill is “the foodie” and loves to host this event when all of the usual Christmas gatherings are long over. Thank you Bill for making January special and we look forward to working with you, as always!
