Like most nights, you will probably sleep tonight in your own bed in your own home. It is a most comfortable home, a very special place. Can you imagine what it would be like to have no place to go, no place to sleep, or no place to call home?
I think I need a little reality check, so on April 15 2011, I will find out. I will sleep homeless on a mat for just one night in the YWCA gym. I am asking for your support to help the YWCA continue to keep a roof over the heads of homeless women and their children.
In 2010, the YWCA Mary Dover House housed 347 women and 106 children. However, in 2010, over 2700 women and children also approached the YWCA of Calgary hoping to find a home. Unfortunately the YWCA could not help them all. Close your eyes and imagine a young child you know (perhaps your own), sleeping outside, in cars, or in parks. How can we just turn our backs and sleep at night?
Recently, the Calgary Home Builders Association generously facilitated a renovation to add 14 beds. In this spirit, I would like to challenge you to continue the effort to help all women and children to have safe housing. If a hundred people each raise a $1000, that will total $100,000.
