    Location
    Kelowna, BC

    Size
    15 storeys, 170,000 ft²

    Scope of Services
    Architecture, Urban Design

    Client
    North Ellis Development

The Madison is one of the premiere residential addresses within the city of Kelowna. Rising 15 storeys, the 56 suites are afforded marvellous views of Lake Okanagan and the surrounding mountains. The building is located in the heart of Kelowna’s Cultural District, providing immediate access to dining and shopping, as well as the amenities of the lake shore – one block away. The Madison recognizes the contextual setting of its location with the inclusion of mixed-use retail and differing forms of residential accommodation. The design consciously enhances the urban fabric of the area with a series of small retail shops along Ellis Street and walk-up townhomes along Doyle Avenue. The Main floor retail shops and lobby, along with the 2nd and 3rd floor above grade parkade, form the solid and traditional base of the building. Moving up the building, the Madison offers a range of large balconies, terraces and sweeping windows to take full advantage of the views and outdoor environment.

Our clients who joined us at the Environments for Aging conference wanted to say thank you to our talented Nadine Roberts for all of her excellent work in getting us organized for the event! Nothing says it better then “Thing 1” and “Thing 2” t-shirts for her twins Rhys and Freya… never mind… “The Mother of all Things” for Mom! And a delicious Edible Arrangement of chocolate covered strawberries! Thank you as always, Nadine!

Penguin Plunge Tour with the Alberta Chapter of the CaGBC!

    Last updated 4 days ago

Last week, BKDI team members Margo, Peter K, Maciej, and Dilip attended a tour of the penguin exhibit at the Calgary Zoo, which opened its doors in February this year. The one hour tour, organized by the Alberta Chapter of the CaGBC, included a visit to the penguin exhibit, gift shop, and large mechanical space featuring the latest technology. The penguin enclosure is targeting LEED® Gold Certification, and the tour outlined numerous considerations that will contribute to this achievement. These include the use of local materials, rapidly renewable materials (i.e. bamboo), improving indoor air quality by flushing the building with fresh air before occupancy, and day lighting, which even features light shafts in the storage room. Furthermore, water efficiency and energy efficiency were targeted, with heat exchangers to remove heat from the penguin enclosure and use it to heat the rest of the building. The state-of-the-art Penguin Plunge is an inspiring example of conservation action in our community!
